摘要：

This paper gives a brief account of the four Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) standards. It includes a summary description of their functionalities and usage. For MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, this paper describes how they are being used to convert old analog applications into digital ones an dhow new applications are being created. For MPEG-4, the major application areas are recalled. For MPEG-7, the strategic role for the development of multimedia industry is highlighted.
