Current status of laboratory accreditation in Japan

Currently we have two accreditation bodies in Japan. One Is accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the other is the Iryo Kanren Service Shinkoukai (IKSS), which means the Medicine-Related Service Promotion Foundation. Seventeen commercial independent laboratories have been. accredited by the CAP at present. Two hundred and fifty nine out of approximately 800 registered independent commercial laboratories have received the IKSS certificates. Another current specially mentioned trend for laboratory accreditation in Japan is to receive the accreditation according to ISO 15189. An organizing committee has been founded in cooperation with the Japan Accreditation Board for Conformity Assessment (JAB) and Japanese Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (JCCLS). Additionally we are planning to establish the National External Quality Assessment Scheme (NEQAS) to be able to offer appropriate data at the opportunity of laboratory inspection.
