摘要
For the future BepiColombo mission to Mercury to be launched in 2011 a design study is carried out for a gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer (MGNS). The design is based on recent developments of cerium doped scintillators, in particular lutetium aluminium perkovskite (LuAlO3:Ce or LuAP). The spherical geometry of the detector simplifies readout, accommodation, and improves noise performance relative to conventional right circular cylinder detectors. In combination with the high photopeak efficiencies of the new scintillator materials, the net result is great simplicity and a marked reduction in mass and power. We have carried out Geant simulations to study the expected performance of the complete instrument. Synthetic spectra have been generated to determine the signal to noise ratios and to investigate the feasibility to discriminate various surface composition models.
