N-Substituted 1-(2-ethoxyethyl)-4-imino- and 4-amino-1-(2-ethoxyethyl)piperidines were synthesized starting from 1-(2-ethoxyelhyl)piperidin-4-one. According to the C-13 NMR data, 1-(2-ethoxyethyl)4-(2-hydroxyethylimino)- and 1-(2-ethoxyethyl)-4-(3-hydroxypropylimo)piperidines exist in solution in the spirocyclic forme, and 1-(2-ethoxyethyl)-4-(4-hydroxybutylimino)piperidine has a linear structure. Benzoylation of 1-(2-ethoxyethyl)-4-hydroxyalkylaminopiperidines occurs first at the hydroxy group and then at the amino group, so that both O-acyl and N,O-diacyl derivatives can be obtained in good yields.
