摘要：

The history of professional societies is examined starting with the medieval Corporations and Universities, through the Renaissance, the scientific revolution, the industrial revolution and the birth of the electromagnetism and its applications, up to the foundation of national professional associations at the end of the XIX century with the emergence of the IEEE as an international institution. Its role is discussed.
