High melting point oxides - a challenge for crystal growth

摘要
The paper reviews two issues that are inherent to the growth, and to thermal analysis, of high melting oxides: (1) Oxides are thermodynamically stable only within atmospheres where the oxygen partial pressure exceeds some minimum value that rises with temperature. This is problematic if Ir, W, or other high melting crucible materials have to be used, as these metals withstand only limited oxygen access. (2) At very high temperature radiation dominates over thermal conduction, limiting heat flow through the growing crystal. Strategies to overcome both problems are demonstrated.
