A novel Smith-Purcell (SP) free-electron laser (FEL) with axial-symmetrical structure is proposed. The distribution of the high frequency field in the resonator is analyzed and the operating frequency and output power are also studied by the use of particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation method. Results indicate that coherent radiation with output peak power up to 58 MW at millimeter wavelengths can be generated by using relativistic electron beams of moderate energy. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
