Initial thoughts of preparation for a trip outside the United States frequently turn to the mechanics and logistics of obtaining a passport, tickets, shots, insurance, and other matters that anyone traveling to the chosen geographic destination would need to address. Preparation for international health service entails all of these domains, taken to a higher level of detail and rigor, and psychologic and intellectual preparation. This article provides an introduction to the issues and a number of resources for more detailed preparation.
