The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) World Radiocommunication (WRC-07) Conference has adopted new primary allocations and identifications for the development of international mobile telecommunications (IMT) systems in a number of bands in the UHF/SHF ranges. The ITU also approved Resolutions ITU-R56 to defines the term IMT-Advanced as the nomenclature for those systems that support the new capabilities of systems beyond IMT-200. A standardization activities in ITU-R will focus on the development of Recommendations on radio interface technologies for IMT-Advanced using the frequency spectrum available for the applications. IMT-Advanced, which is characterized by broadband cellular systems having a capacity greater than 100 Mb/s in high-mobility environments and 1 Gb/s in low-mobility environments. It has been predicted that the total spectrum band-width requirements for both existing mobile systems, including IMT-2000 and IMT-Advnced, will be 1,280 MHz and 1,720 MHz for low and high user demand in 2010.
