摘要
A re-examination of the original material, combined with new specimens, has allowed a comprehensive revision of the structure and affinities of the problematic sponge Amphispongia oblonga Salter 1861. Details of the hexactine-based spiculation, wall structure, homogeneously expanding growth pattern, and apertural marginalia allow a clear interpretation as a hexactinellid sponge, albeit with several unusual features. It is best regarded as a member of a distinct family within the order Reticulosa, superfamily uncertain.
