Phenomenology of the effect of ion irradiation on the work function of metals

摘要
Polycrystalline Al and Zn samples were irradiated with 30 keV Ar+ ions at room temperature and the changes of their electron work functions, (1) were measured by the Kelvin method. Similarly to what was earlier experienced with stainless steel the changes of (1) as a function of displacement per atom (DPA) were seen to be of extremal character. This can be considered as a manifestation of competing formation and annealing of displacements. Comparing the Lang-Kohn theory of work function with the present experimental results the changes of the Wigner-Seitz radii were evaluated. A differential law for the dependence of the Wigner-Seitz radius on DPA is proposed.
