Bremsstrahlung emissivity of a proton-electron plasma in a strong magnetic field

摘要
A self-consistent calculation of the bremsstrahlung emissivity for a hot optically thin plasma in a strong external magnetic field is presented. The emissivity is calculated fur a nonthermal electron velocity distribution f(upsilon). Two competing elementary processes are taken into account, i.e., Coulomb scattering and resonant cyclotron emission, which lead to a depopulation of f(upsilon) above the cyclotron energy. The resulting spectra show an extremely narrow line feature at the cyclotron frequency. The total bremsstrahlung emissivity as a function of the plasma temperature and the magnetic field is also given.
