The composite of Fe/Al2O3 gradient coatings with finish surface and no macro-crack on steel substrate was prepared by the wet type craft technique (including the method of spray and the method of sol-gel) system, and the performances of the composite were investigated by SEM, XRD etc. The results show that the Fe/Al2O3 gradient coatings are composed of alpha-Al2O3, AlFeO3, AlFe3 and Al86Fe14, whose interfacial Al and Fe element varied gradually on the material thickness direction. No obvious delimitation phenomenon appeared and the alpha-Al2O3 and FeAlO3 were found as the main phase. The average bonding strength between the coating and steel base is as high as 17.62 MPa. Comparing the hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance between the composites surface and steel substrate, it is found that the former is better than the latter, and, the hardness of the former is 4.5 times bigger than that of the latter, and the friction and wear volume of the former is half bigger than that of the latter.
