Roughly there have been three stages in the development of operations research/management science in the people's republic of China. The first stage (1955-1965) was characterized by large-scale campaigns. CPM and Optimum Seeking Method swept the whole country with astonishing economic savings. The cultural revolution stagnated the process during the second stage (1966-1976). The third stage began when the door to the outside world officially opened. Operations research/management science, almost in every field, has been playing a major role in accelerating national modernization. Some new explorations, such as the Grey System Theory (including Grey LP, Grey 0-1 Programming Grey NLP etc.), have been emerging.
