Synthesis and ion exchange properties of manganese(IV) dioxide doped by 3+transition metal cations

The samples of mixed Mn-M oxides (M-transition metal) were synthesized by redox reaction of KMnO4 and MnSO4 in the presence of Co2+ and Fe2+ cations. Co3+ and Fe3+ ions, having similar ionic radii to Mn3+, were incorporated into MnO2 structure and were not removed even by concentrated HNO3 solution. Mixed oxides exhibit higher affinity for heavy alkaline earth ions (Ba2+ and Ra2+) than alpha -MnO2 and lower selectivity for alkali metal cations. The separation factor for Ra-Ba pair on mixed oxides is much higher than on alpha -MnO2 and cation exchange resins. The obtained alpha -MnO2 samples can be used for the determination of Ra-226,Ra-228 in natural water containing significant amounts of potassium and barium salts.
