Effect of the composition of aqueous solutions of 2-propanol on the kinetics of the liquid-phase hydrogenation of 4-nitroaniline

On the basis of results of kinetic studies, the parameters of the hydrogenation of 4-nitroaniline on a Raney nickel catalyst in aqueous solutions of 2-propanol were determined. It was shown that, at 298 K, the reaction proceeds with a small contribution from diffusion hindering of hydrogen transport to the overall rate of the process. Variations in the concentration of 2-propanol in the solution affect the rate constants of hydrogenation, degree of employment of the catalyst surface, and adsorption of 4-nitroaniline; the energies of activation of the reaction vary insignificantly. A quantitative cot-relation between the parameters of solvation in the solution and the rate of hydrogenation of 4-nitroaniline on the catalyst surface was determined.
