摘要
A hundred and eighty two S. pneumoniae strains, isolated from clinical specimens (nasal, ophthalmic and otic smears, blood cultures, sputum and pus) of children in our hospital, in Athens, during a one year period, were tested for their susceptibility to penicillin and other antibiotics. 24 strains (13%) were non-susceptible to penicillin. Out of these 5 (21%) had intermediate resistance to penicillin and 19 (79%) were highly resistant to it. All strains with high resistance to penicillin (MIC greater than or equal to 2 mug/ml) were also resistant to other antibiotics (multiresistant strains). Molecular typing, which is considered necessary in order to establish the existence - if any - of an epidemic clone, has not been completed yet.
