The artificial pulp made from reed was studied in this paper. The pulping method adopted kraft cooking followed pre-hydrolysis. The bleaching method used CEHA four paragraphs bleaching. The aim was to achieve the artificial pulp with low-ash and high alpha-cellulose content. The experimental conditions of the hydrolysis kraft pulping were optimized by the Central Composite Design of STATGRAPHICS PLUS 4.1 platform. The results showed that alkali charge 18% (to Na(2)O), sulfidity 18.5% (to Na(2)O), holding time 75min could yield the better characteristic of pulp. Meanwhile, the other experimental conditions were: maximum cooking temperature 160 C, liquid ratio 1:6, time at maximum temperature 2.0h. Under the above optimal conditions, the performance index for the artificial pulp was: brightness 80.6%ISO, ash 0.17%, alpha-cellulose content 96.5%, pentosan content 2.14%, DP1004. Among them, the main index of pentosan and alpha-cellulose content reached the national standards levels, but the ash content of pulp was higher and its brightness was lower than standard levels, which should be further explored.
