Treatment of established postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) includes drug-therapy, local infiltration, and neurosurgical procedures. PHN is difficult to treat, and therapy must be individualized. Analgesics and anesthetic drugs are commonly used, but have limited value. Tricyclic antidepressants, anticonvulsant drugs and neuroleptics are important components of therapy. Capsaicin in high concentrations may releav burning pain, but the effect is still controversial discussed. Neurosurgical procedures are treatments of last resort.
