摘要
The susceptibility of a range of ceramics to water driven slow crack growth (SCG) was tested via comparison of flexure strengths in air at 22 degrees C versus in liquid N-2 at -196 degrees C. Tested specimens were fractographically examined for fracture origins, fracture mode (i.e. the relative amounts of trans- versus inter- granular fracture) and whether specimen fractures were inconsistent with the assumptions of the test and hence needed to be rejected. Fractography proved to be a valuable addition to the evaluation, e.g. showing frequent intergranular fracture implying SCG in thin grain boundary oxide films in nonoxides with oxide additions and in commercial alumina.
