Viruses are the most numerous and diverse biological entities in the oceans. We are now beginning to understand the ecological role of viruses in the marine environment. As a result, we believe that viruses have important roles in both biochemical cycling and structuring of marine communities. (C) 2008 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
