摘要
The variola virus was the first biological agent to be used as a military weapon. It is considered as one of the main agents that could potentially be used in the context of bioterrorism. Smallpox was declared eradicated in 1980. So, in case of a confirmed or suspected case of smallpox, a deliberate, intentional origin must be considered. The early diagnosis of the first case is essential for initiating an epidemiological alert. All physicians should be well informed of the epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of smallpox. (C) 2003 Elsevier SAS. Tous droits reserves.
