In cases of pineal tumors, a germ cell tumor should always be suspected. As some of them are secreting tumors, tumoral markers (AFP and/or hGC) are an important part of the diagnostic process. Their positivity either in the serum and/or in the cerebrospinal fluid may lead to an accurate diagnosis, avoiding a potentially dangerous surgical biopsy. Follow-up of tumoral markers is useful during and after treatment in order to monitor response to chemotherapy or a remission status. (C) 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
