摘要
In Greek and Latin culture, especially but not only relating to religious practice, and probably already in the cultures of the Ancient Near East, we often encounter the motif of 'Twelve Items' (cf. e.g. the twelve altars of Lavinium or Ael. Arist. Rome 100-106), with the frequent addition of a thirteenth element, which is different for one reason or another: Otto Weinreich has provided extensive documentation. We add a new example, Verg. Aen. 7.641-817: the catalogue of the twelve Italic armies and of their commanders plus the thirteenth, the heroine Camilla, queen of the Volsci, who makes a precious seal to the review.
