摘要
This article explores commercial entertainment in Berlin as an "art world." The first part provides an overview of the city's entertainment ecology during the period, contrasting it with "mass culture," which emerged around 1930. The second part focuses on artists and entrepreneurs, characterizing them as "jacks-of-all-trades" who faced the insecurities of their occupation by performing "success." The third part describes how paid performers mobilized audiences, while spectators themselves took initiative to get involved in the show. Highlighting the importance of performance and interaction, the article concludes that commercial entertainment of the period is best understood as a "culture of competence" (Peter Bailey).
