This study was to investigate the antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli isolated in 7 consecutive years in the First Bethune Hospital. Disk diffusion test was used to study the antimicrobial resistance. The data were analyzed by WHONET 5 software according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Most of 3375 strains of Escherichia coli were collected from sputum 976 (28.9%), secretions 660 (19.6%), pus 630 (18.7%) and urine 591 (17.5%) during the past 7 years in the First Bethune Hospital. The rate of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in Escherichia coli was from 43.6% to 60.1 %. Susceptibility test showed that Escherichia colt producing ESBLs was multiple resistant. The antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli had increased in recent 7 years. The change of the antimicrobial resistance should be investigated in order to direct rational drug usage in the clinic and prevent bacterial strain of drug resistance from being transmitted.
