An in-situ X-ray absorption cell is designed to pursue the potential and and fuel dependant changes in the electrocatalyst structure during real fuel cell operation. It was observed that the set-up in transmission geometry with an graphite beam window was not successful at the Ru K-edge due to the strong absorption of Pt in the Pt-Ru anode catalyst. So, the cell is modified using either a Be or a Kapton foil window to make florescence measurement possible. The results show that the unsupported system undergoes structural changes similar to those revealed for carbon-supported Pt-Ru in fuel cell operation.
