Fabrication of Ag-clad BSCCO-2223 tapes using (Bi,Pb)(2)CuO4 and (Sr,Ca)(2)CuO3 precursors

A new precursor powder process for the fabrication of silver sheathed Bi(Pb)-2223 tapes by an oxide-powder-in-tube method is reported. The precursor powder is made from a mixture of (Bi, Pb)(2)CuO4 and (Sr, Ca)(2)CuO3. Fully processed tapes with the overall composition Bi1.7Pb0.3Ca2Sr2Cu3Ox showed an homogeneous 2223 microstructure containing only small amounts of second phases. A critical current density of 8500 A cm(-2) (77 K, 0 T) was obtained for a 60 mu m thick single-filament tape after a total reaction time of 160 h with two intermediate pressings.
