摘要
Objective: To assess recurrence of nasal polyp(s) in patients undergoing FESS and conventional intranasal polypectomy in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Methodology: It was a Quantitative experimental study conducted in department of ENT, Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi. Patients with bilateral ethmoidal polyps, who were undergoing surgery for the first time, with age 20-50 years and both genders, were included in the study. Patients with unilateral antro-choanal polyps, who had some other surgical procedure for nasal polyps and with comorbidities as asthma, aspirin sensitivity, diabetes and hypertension were excluded. Nasal polyps were diagnosed on nasal endoscopy. Patients of Group A underwent conventional intranasal polypectomy by snare method and Group B underwent Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). Results: At 2 weeks follow-up, Group A had recurrence in 42(52.5%) patients, 10(12.5%) were males and 32(40%) females. Group B had recurrence in 38(47.5%) patients, 14(17.5%) were males and 24(30%) were females (p=0.2). At 4 weeks follow-up, Group A had recurrence in 45(56.3%) patients, 10(12.5%) were males and 35(43.8%) were females. In Group B, 35(43.8%) patients had recurrence, 14(17.5%) were males and 21(26.3%) were females (p=0.08). Conclusion: FESS was an effective treatment option in terms of lower rate of nasal polyposis recurrence as compared to conventional intrana salpolypectomy.
