The GHRS has had a significant impact on our understanding of active galaxies and, in particular, the environment around the active galactic nuclei. UV spectra obtained at an unprecedented combination of resolution and signal-to-noise are of considerable importance in the ongoing effort to develop detailed physical models of these complex objects. I will review the contributions that the GHRS has made in understanding the various components of active galaxies, with particular emphasis on a relatively new component that is much more ubiquitous than originally thought: intrinsic absorption in the UV spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies.
