Effects of substorms in the night auroral E-region

摘要
Based on magnetic and ionospheric observations in a meridian chain of stations near 90 degreesE extending from L = 4 to L = 12, an analysis of simultaneous measurements of the geomagnetic field and ionospheric parameters was carried out in moderately disturbed days. It was found, that in evening and near-midnight hours the development of substorm at auroral stations is preceded by reduction of fbEs to the perfect vanishing of the layer. At subauroral stations the opposite effect was observed: fbEs increase before the appearance of substorm. Comparing the location of the maximum fbEs area with the structure of electrojet the conclusion can be drawn, that the maximum of the westward auroral electrojet lies not within the region of maximum conductivity but somewhat farther to the north. These findings strengthen the assumption made previously that the electrojet is greatest in the region of projection of the minimum internal resistance of the magnetospheric source.
