摘要
We now shift to the Thai-Myanmar border and the rise of Mae Sot and Mrawaddy from small settlements on either side of the border into a thriving and increasingly co-joined trading hub. This first involved Mae Sot from the 1960s and then Myawaddy from the 1990s. Key factors were the changing security and economic politics of the two central governments, both internally and externally (involving trading) directed. However, what crucially shaped development in the area were the responses of the growing army of border-landers, impelled by their own agendas regarding the opportunities the border was creating in terms of 'legal' and `illegal' trade and migration. Central governments created the framework, but were hardly in control of the way these thriving communities developed.
