Metaphor, simile, approximation Both metaphor and approximation may be seen as cognitive and discursive strategies. Under both viewpoints, the common ground is provided by analogy. The aim of this paper is to analyse approximation against the background of the whole constellation of competing cognitive strategies, that is, metaphor, the figure of conflict, interaction and projection, simile, the figure of analogy, and mitigation, which shares with simile the attitude to weaken the strength of projection.
