Free volumes in several ion-conducting glasses

摘要
Studies of the packing of atoms in glass have usually been made by assuming that the atoms are spherical. Since spheres contain large spaces into which no nearby atoms or ions can penetrate, cubes rather than spheres are used in this Letter for representing atoms and the free volume is defined as a volume in which no glass constituents exist. It is concluded that alkali ions in alkali berate or silicate glasses occupy the free volume which the glass network-former provides. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
