Truing of diamond wheels by laser

Studies on dressing diamond wheels by Nd: YAG laser was carried out in our previous works. In the present paper, the laser truing method for diamond wheels is Studied. The feasibility and principle of truing diamond wheels by laser are theoretically discussed. By means of a SEM, the surface topography of both resin and bronze bonded diamond wheels after laser truing are observed, and also the collected chips from the diamond wheels during laser truing. The roundness variations of the diamond wheels after laser truing are measured by a roundness measuring instrument. It is shown that the diamond wheels can be trued to an expectant geometric shape and accuracy by controlling the laser irradiation parameters and the diamond wheel motions relative to laser beam, which is positioned tangentially onto the diamond wheel. In laser truing, the resin bond materials are decomposed, the bronze bond materials are molten or vaporized, and diamond grains that are less damaged are removed accompanying by sputter of the bond materials. After one pass truing, the surface topography of the wheels is well and the roundness of the wheels is evidently decreased. The second time truing is available for further improving the surface topography and its accuracy of the diamond wheels if necessary.
