Reaction of [RuII(tpy)(pic)(H2O)]+ (1) with KHSO5 resulting in the formation of [RuIV(tpy)(pic)(O)]+ (2) was studied kinetically as a function of [KHSO5], temperature (15-35 degrees C), and pressure (10-30 MPa) at a fixed pH of 5.1 using spectrophotometric techniques. A suggested mechanism that is in agreement with the observed rate and activation parameters is presented. Complex 1 was found to induce DNA (pBluescript) cleavage in the presence of KHSO5, which proceeds via oxygen transfer from 2.
