摘要
Since the data of 3D GIS tends to be quite large, problems arise when visualizing and transmitting these datasets. To satisfy the requirements of real-time display and fast transmission, compression becomes necessary. In this paper, a wavelet-based compressing approach is adopted. First, the surface mesh is converted into grid form. Then, the grid is divided into a small number of square regions: T1, T2... Tn. Subsequently, the change of gradient is estimated in each region. Thus the resolution of each region can be reflected by this change. The more greatly the gradient changes, the higher the resolution scale is. Then, wavelet-based compression is applied to each region with a ratio according to its resolution. That is to say, where the resolution is low, the compression ratio is high and vice versa. Therefore, this method can adaptively adjust the compression ratio. At the last part of the paper, the compression results based on 4 kinds of wavelets are compared and conclusion is given.
