摘要
A preliminary study has been undertaken of the diameter characteristics of the fibre ends in processed tops from wools grown in a Mediterranean climate. These wools generally have a large seasonal variation in fibre diameter along the staple e.g. some Western Australian (WA) wools. Examining commercial consignments of WA wools, it is shown that shearing at the time of minimum fibre diameter (i.e. autumn for WA wools) leads to a reduction (relative to results obtained at other shearing times) in the mean value and width of the diameter distribution of the fibre ends, and consequently the percentage of coarse fibre ends in the processed top. For example for WA wools with a mean diameter of 21 micrometres, autumn shearing is equivalent to about a one micrometre reduction in the mean fibre diameter of the fibre: ends as compared to spring shearing. Thus in some micron categories, it is expected that consignments made up of wools shorn at the point of minimum diameter may demonstrate the consumer benefit of improved skin comfort in garments.
