Dams in the United Kingdom - An industrial heritage

There are no new major reservoir developments currently under construction in the United Kingdom. In view of this, attention in recent years has concentrated on maintaining the country's ageing stock of dams, many of which were constructed during the industrial revolution of the 19th century. This paper presents an overview of recent work undertaken in the U.K. concerning the ageing of dams, illustrated by reference to specific case studies. It covers both embankment and concrete and masonry structures, and highlights potential areas of concern for future safety.
