(Figure Presented) DNA fragmentation: Proton irradiation (see picture) can lead to complex DNA strand breaks at the sugar-phosphate backbone. Precise measurements of the excitation energy of transient deoxyribose dications after proton collisions at Bragg-peak energies are reported. The breakup patterns seem to be independent of the excitation energy, suggesting a statistical fragmentation mechanism. © 2008 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.
