Atomic oxygen on a Pt(111) surface studied by infrared spectroscopy

We have made a detailed investigation of atomic oxygen chemisorbed on a Pt(lll) surface using infrared spectroscopy. The half-width of the absorption peak of the metal-atom stretch mode was about 3 times broader than for chemisorbed diatomic molecules. The temperature dependence of the peak width indicated a strong interaction with the substrate phonons. In addition, a dip in the absorption spectrum, what is called an antiabsorption, was found at lower energies, associated with the dipole-forbidden frustrated translation, [S0031-9007(99)08814-6].
