The influence on G.F. Watts of the Pheidian sculptures from the Parthenon has long been acknowledged. Also important to him was the monumental 'Horse tamer' on Monte Cavallo, Rome, known as Pollux and then believed also to be the work of Pheidias. The sculpture's influence on Watts is most clearly recognisable in his 1847-48 painting 'Satan', which illuminates the understanding of Pheidian form that he was to demonstrate in later paintings and sculpture.
