Hydrothermal Synthesis of Size-Controlled Hollow Carbon Spheres

Size-controlled hollow carbon spheres were fabricated by hydrothermal treatment of sucrose in the absence of other additives, such as templates, surfactants. The hollow structure and composition of carbon spheres were characterized by XRD, FTIR, TEM and SEM. The results indicate that the diameter of carbon spheres is tunable by adding various carbon sources, on the range of 0.5 similar to 5 mu m. On the other hand, functional groups of carbon spheres contain OH, C=O, and COOH, which are available for further surface functional modification.
