Mental retardation is defined as an IQ < 70, and affects approximately 2% of the general population. Between 40% and 50% of these patients have a genetic defect. While databases currently list 1600 genetic syndromes with mental retardation, the number of defects without specific syndromology is assumed to be much higher. This article aims to present the differential diagnosis of the more frequent genetic syndromes and help with the clarification of syndromologic and non-syndromoligic forms.
