To date, the primary application for extrusion coated polyesters has been ovenable trays (i.e., containers for microwave or oven-ready foods). However, recent advances in polyester coating technology have opened new doors for extrusion coated polyester in combination with various flexible substrates. In this paper, we review reasons for choosing polyesters in flexible packaging, new techniques for achieving adhesion with polyester coatings, and some potential applications for using these techniques.
