摘要
Beside the traumatic brain injury the bleeding is the leading cause of death in trauma. Relevant bleeding results not only in reduction of oxygen transport capacity by loss of erythrocyts, but further more in coagulopathy by loss of thrombocyts and coagulation factors, which again can worsen the bleeding. To stop the bleeding as early as possible in the prehospital setting is an important and often neglected factor in EMS. To improve the awareness of physicians and EMS-personnel on this problem the classical ABCDE-algorithm of trauma care was extended by a frontal < C > meaning, critical bleeding". An easy to use, fast and safe device to control bleeding in extremities is the tourniquet, which was frowned long time and now after successful use in military missions returns to civilian use. The following article is to explain indications and correct use of the tourniquet in the prehospital setting.
