Engineering plastics extensively in automobiles in a variety of applications such as grille opening retainers, bumpers and decorative panels. Recently, engineering plastics are also expanding into larger parts applications. This work describes the development of a new class of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) based engineering resins that possess high stiffness, toughness and impact resistance. The first product of this new class of Impet(R) thermalplastic polyesters is Impet Hi 430. The flow properties of this compound allow molding of large parts. The composition can be tuned to meet performance requirements by varying the reinforcement and impact modifier revel. Structure-property relationships and the fracture mechanism will also be discussed.
