Discussed are details of the charged liquid surface reconstruction in an external field, enabling one to draw a deep analogy between the development of the charged liquid surface instability and the spinodal decomposition in the theory of phase transitions. Various consequences of this analogy for the theory of spinodal decomposition are considered. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.
