摘要
A new approach of narratological criticism "Overall-Extended Close Reading" is proposed and convincingly demonstrated in Narrative, Style and Subtext by Shen Dan. This approach combines narratology with stylistics and close reading of new formalism, and takes into account intertextual relations and historical contexts. While introducing the methodology, Shen Dan first clarifies some key narratological concepts, which paves the way for the following analysis of texts. Combined with other methods, "Overall-Extended Close Reading" can successfully uncover the subtexts of narratives, thus significantly increasing the power of narratological criticism. This book by Shen Dan is a landmark in narratology.
