After a period of fairly extensive development of reservoirs, the United Kingdom experienced a number of failures and incidents. Legislation was introduced in 1930 in the form of the Reservoirs (Safety Provisions) Act, 1930. In 1975 a new Act, the Reservoirs Act 1975 was passed to improve the 1930 Act. Proposals for change and a continuing reservoir research programme could result in a very different basis for legislation in the future. Risk assessment although in its infancy is now being used to help owners prioritise remedial works.
